About Me
Photography has always been an
appealing field to me. I bought my first "real"
(SLR) camera in 1991 while serving in the
US Navy.
While training at P.C.D.I in photography I took a job as a Wal Mart (PCA) portrait studio photographer.  My training and flexibility were put to
use and I served as an assistant to the district manager as a roaming augmentation to studio operations through out the district. As my
training in the
science of camera operation and basic photography  progressed I felt increasingly limited, artistically,  in the "fast food"
environment of that type of portrait studio. I was also experiencing , as a result of my schedule requirements, increased interference from my
disability and decided,at that point,  that the intensity of the job was better suited for someone else.
Frustrated by my apparent  inability to step beyond what I viewed as equipment limitations imposed by financial constraint,
or, maybe just something too involved for my (then) current level of interest and available time to dedicate to the study
thereof.  Regardless, I suppressed my "photographic nature" in my pursuit of a career as a
 US Navy Deep Sea Diver.

As time would have it , and things would go, my career in the navy was about twenty seven years shorter than I was
planning and hoping. In early 1993 I received orders home awaiting a "disability retirement" type discharge for
post traumatic stress disorder.  I was discharged from the navy (with severance pay) and re-classified as a disabled veteran.
I began developing a business model in fall of 2005 and established skpetersonphotograhy.com as a web presence in late November. In
early 2006 I relocated to rural Arizona unaware that internet access was still limited to dial-up at my selected location. This presented a major
road block to progress as my model relies heavily on the internet in many areas.

After about a year and a half in Arizona circumstances beyond my control required my return to MN. I am currently located in Owatonna, Mn
and I continue to develop my skill in the art, and, science of photography.
I bought copious filters and attachments, and, shot roll upon roll of nearly everything I could think of. My results at that time
were fair, but, I was often unable to completely capture what I was hoping to see in the print.

My quest for recovery has taken me to many places. Within a few months of discharge I  began retraining as an emergency medical
technician. After formation of the Department of Homeland Security in 2001 I sought, and received, certification as a first responder in  the
event of  WMD (weapons of mass destruction) incidents. I also trained as a piano technician, and, as a locksmith before being blessed with
the birth of my daughter in 2004. At that point felt the overpowering desire for pictures. Not just pictures, but good pictures... Not just good
pictures, but, consistently good pictures with the possibility of the occasional great picture. I was no longer satisfied with what I knew about the
art, or science,  of taking a picture. As coincidence would have it I also happened to have the available time to dedicate to study and enough
financial liberty to invest in reasonable gear!

That was when I considered  the possibility that training in photography at an advanced level might help me begin to overcome my artistic
limitations.
